MJC Community Orchestra Remembers Ernie Bucio
The Modesto Junior College Community Orchestra, directed by Anne Martin, will present a concert featuring everything from Beethoven to Louis Armstrong on Tuesday, April 23, at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Media and Performing Arts Center. The orchestra will open the program with Beethoven’s Egmont Overture and then perform a Gypsy Dance by Saint Saens and a Persian Dance by Mussorgsky. MJC Music major, Connor McKay, a former student of Ernie Bucio, will perform the trumpet solo in Alan Hovhannes’ Prayer of Saint Gregory. This mystical work for trumpet and strings is a prayer in darkness to Saint Gregory the Illuminator.
A Tribute to Satchmo is dedicated to the memory of Ernie Bucio and features classic tunes beloved by Louis Armstrong, such as What a Wonderful World, When the Saints Go Marching in (Singing along encouraged), Saint Louis Blues, and Hello Dolly. The program concludes with a medley from Fiddler on the Roof featuring Juan Gutierrez on violin and great hits such as If I were a Rich Man, To Life, Sunrise, Sunset, and Tradition.
Martin is a graduate of the Yale School of Music and is in her twelfth year as director of string and orchestra programs at MJC. She also serves as the conductor of the Modesto Symphony Youth Orchestra Concert group. Celebrate the legacy of Ernie Bucio by supporting music making in our community. Admission to the concert is $5 general and $1 for students and seniors (62 or better).
