This Week in Arts — On Campus and Beyond Edition

Professor Erik Maki discusses the music program for the Veteran's Day Celebration at Graceada Park.

This week was filled with Arts activities featuring students, faculty and retirees from the college.  On Friday, students from the Visual Arts Club put the finishing touches on Scholastic Inspirations – High School Art Teachers’ Exhibition in the MJC Art Gallery.  The show opens on 11/12/13 and runs through 12/5.  A reception with the artists is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 21st.

Later Friday evening Dr. Stephen Stroud conducted the MJC Concert Choir in an outstanding performance in the Performing and Media Arts Center Main Auditorium.  Dr. Duana Demus-Leslie’s vocal students provided beautiful solo pieces.

Students from Kim Gyuran’s storytelling classes staffed the MJC booth at the Farmer’s Market on Saturday.  They enjoyed promoting the upcoming theatre production of The Wind in the Willows which opens in December.

Retired Arts Division Dean Jim Johnson directed a production of The Freedom Riders at the Gallo Center.  Wes Page provided visual image support and Linda Johnson, adjunct Humanities instructor, played a cameo role.  (Modesto Bee Article)

Later Saturday, Professor Anne Martin conducted the Modesto Symphony Youth Orchestra at the Mary Stuart Rogers Theater in the Gallo Center.  Over 100 students from more than 40 schools participated in the musical event.  (Modesto Bee Article)

On Monday, Professor Erik Maki (shown above) conducted a combined Community Concert Band and Symphonic Band at Graceada Park.  The annual celebration of Veteran’s Day was a grand success thanks in no small part to the energetic and inspirational music provided by one of MJC’s top ensembles.  Adjunct instructor Bob Scott joined the band with his magic clarinet.  President Jill Stearns and Vice President Susan Kincade were spotted in the crowd enjoying the festivities.
